"From an early age, art offered something I struggled to find elsewhere, a place where there were no predetermined answers, only the possibility of discovery."
-Steve DePino
Steve DePino (b. 1976, Connecticut) is an artist working in painting, drawing, and photography. From an early age, art offered something he struggled to find elsewhere: a place where there were no predetermined answers, only the possibility of discovery. That experience continues to shape his practice today.
Working between observation and imagination, DePino begins each painting without trying to control its outcome. He is drawn to the unexpected moments that emerge through the process—when a brushstroke, a color, or a shape reveals something he could not have planned. Whether representational or abstract, his paintings are less about describing the world than creating space for curiosity, reflection, and personal interpretation.
DePino received a BFA in Illustration from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Following a career in photojournalism, he established an independent photography studio while maintaining a lifelong commitment to painting and drawing. His work has been exhibited at the Society of Illustrators, the New Haven Paint & Clay Club, and the Lyme Art Association. He lives and works in Guilford, Connecticut.
